“ART AND SPIRIT” - THE PAINTINGS OF HEDY KLINEMAN – ON EXHIBIT AT KISMET
(Westport, CT) —The connection between art and spirit is explored in the richly textured paintings and silk-screens of New York based artist Hedy Klineman in the exhibit “Art and Spirit” opening at KISMET on Thursday September 15. A cocktail reception with the artist will celebrate the opening from 6-9pm. KISMET is located at 9 Sconset Square in Westport. For information and directions call (203) 222-8880.
Klineman’s work that will fill the space at KISMET include paintings that employ silk-screens and a technique of layering acrylic paint and metal leaf representing many Eastern deities including Ganesh, the lovers of Shakti and Shiva, the bodhisattva Tara and other Asian symbolism. “Klineman’s engagement with paint, especially her vivifying brushwork … truly distinguishes her as an affiliate of that painterly mid-century clan [Abstract Expressionism]”, wrote Tom Bredenbach in his treatise on her work “Longings and Higher Self” Bredenbach continues:
Klineman seems at home with the canonical figures she portrays, and her hesitancy to modify their essential forms is consonant with her feeling that she learns from them as she paints. “My purpose in this existence is to make this work,” she says. While meditation upon these incarnations and deities, which Klineman regards as “reflections of our higher selves,” is certainly one level on which these paintings can work, less important is any didactic insistence upon their roles beyond what is suggested by each persona’s position and expression. What interests Klineman are their (and our) “interchangeable natures” as well as “the forms and shapes” of these figures “without the absolutism of identity.”
Art and Spirit will be on exhibit at KISMET through October 26. In addition to the KISMET show, several pieces of Hedy’s will be shown at Richard’s, Greenwich, CT, along with the work of photographer Kevin Brubriski from October 15 – November 4.
KISMET is an art gallery and lifestyle space located in Sconset Square in Westport, CT that offers visitors a unique gallery and shopping experience. “CONNECTIONS” - THE PAINTINGS OF WESTPORT ARTIST – JANET SLOM – ON EXHIBIT AT KISMET FROM AUGUST 4
(Westport, CT) —An opening cocktail reception is planned for Thursday August 4 in celebration of the opening of “Connections – the Paintings of Janet Slom” at KISMET. Open to the public, the reception will take place from 6-9pm. “Connections” will be in the gallery through September 14. KISMET is located at 9 Sconset Square in Westport. For information and directions call (203) 222-8880.
An internationally acclaimed painter, sculptor and performance artist, Westport, CT based, Janet Slom’s paintings have been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Europe and South Africa, including the United Nations; Kohn Pederssen Fox Gallery in New York City; the Frank Pages Gallery in Germany; Arte E Arte, Italy; Shambhala Gallery, South Africa; Adelson Galleries in New York City and Salon de Mars in Switzerland. Most recently she has been working with clients on commissions for her paintings. In the commissions Slom explores the energy of personal interaction through inquiry that sparks creativity and offers an extraordinary window into a process - marked by deep concentration - on the ways in which the purpose, the layers of meaning, the message and the materials come together. The final result, she says, carries not only the indelible imprint of something unique to the clients but a record, as well, of a very special journey of discovery for both the client and the artist.
Slom’s work is strongly influenced by the complex politics, traditions, culture and society of her native South Africa. Shambhala, the name of her childhood home, was a legendary Himalayan kingdom and symbolizes the Tibetan belief of leading a harmonious life and meaningful existence through gentleness, courage, self-knowledge and freedom. As Janet Slom explores the influence in her work, Shambhala signals the dance of opposing forces in life, and connects to concepts of collective consciousness, universal brotherhood and a harmonious, respectful relationship of man to nature and the planet. Her paintings are at once powerfully moving and deeply contemplative and peaceful.
As part of the opening celebration, Mark Ancona from Fountainhead Wines and Fat Cat Pie Co., Norwalk, CT will present a selection of Loire Valley wines from Domain Richou.

His market scenes and glimpses of Burma settings have the familiar balance of calm and vibrancy that is so achieved in his works. “There is an unadulterated beauty and charm rarely seen in contemporary art that can melt even the most hard-nosed cynic’s views and lure them into taking pleasure in the serene splendor of the paintings” (Priya Malhotra, Asian Art News).
Born in 1945, Mg Aw studied with U Thein Han. His work has been widely exhibited in Burma, including the Rangoon University Annual Art show, Gardener Art Show, Gangaw Village Art Show and G. V. Art Center, among others. Mg
Aw’s paintings have also been exhibited in Singapore, Australia, and New York, and are found in countless private collections in Asia, Europe and the U.S.

“ETHEREAL REFLECTIONS’ – EXHIBIT OF AWARD WINNING PAINTER AL LACHMAN
(Westport, CT) —KISMET, the gallery/lifestyle space in Westport will celebrate the work of Bucks County, PA artist Al Lachman with the opening of “Ethereal Reflections” on Thursday May 5, 2005. The exhibit, which will feature the award winning artist’s most recent work, will run through June 11. The public is invited to attend an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, May 5, 6-9pm at KISMET which is located at 9 Sconset Square (15 Myrtle Avenue) in the heart of Westport, CT. KISMET is open Monday-Saturday, 10-6pm, and Sunday by appointment.
Lachman’s work, oil and acrylic painted on a specially prepared clear surface, embraces natural light and textures with the use of brilliant color to allow the ethereal quality of landscapes both physical and human to emerge. “I try to approach each painting with a minimum of predigested information. I look at the world with the natural curiosity of a child, always looking for unique qualities that each new moment brings to it … The most exciting paintings for me are those that have a bold, fresh approach and at the same time show the sensitive and subtle workings of the heart and mind,” the artist writes. He concludes “I paint loose, free and spontaneously, not only because it satisfies me but it also allows the viewer to involve themselves visually and emotionally in the painting. I let their imagination finish the painting while my imagination has made it possible.”
Mr. Lachman’s work is represented in private and corporate collections throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and South America including The Walt Disney Corporate Collection; The University of Georgia Law School; The Hershey Corporation; Ford Motor Company; the Hartford Steam & Boiler Insurance Company, and Sun Bank to name a few.

First East Coast showing at KISMET for two visionary artists:
(Westport, CT)--The Westport lifestyle space, KISMET, brings visionary New-Mexican artists Barbara Barkley and Michael Colombo to Connecticut for their debut east coast showing, Transformation. Running April 1-May 1, 2005, Transformation features Barkley’s unique handmade paper art works and Colombo’s vast, conceptual panoramas of aqua media. The opening is scheduled for April 3 (Sunday), 2-5pm. Barkley will teach a Hands on Workshop in Creativity and Self Discovery on April 2 (Saturday) 2-5pm. KISMET is located at 9 Sconset Square (15 Myrtle Avenue) in the heart of Westport, CT, and is open Monday-Saturday, 10-6pm, and Sunday by appointment.
Barbara Barkley has been making fine art in handmade paper for over 20 years, creating two-dimensional and sculptural art works that are striking in their textural richness and lyrical quality. Originally schooled in traditional Japanese papermaking, Barkley combines the ancient knowledge of processing and manipulating plant fibers with more contemporary, Western techniques to investigate the feel of antiquity possible in papermaking. Through a patient process of layering variously colored pulps, she creates abstract and meditative designs inspired by ancient calligraphy and scrolls, symbolic geometry, and archetypal forms. Barkley’s warm earth tone palette is enhanced by highly contrasted colors, giving a bold, modern look to these timeless images. All colors in the artist’s work are composed of pigmented hemp, flax, and cotton rags often mixed with her processed and hand beaten plant fibers for additional texture.
“As I watch fibers in my paper vat swirl and mix, I am caught up in a timeless place,” Barkley explains. “Pictures delivered in dreams, phrases remembered on waking….I seek geometry to give me gravity—a point to leap from. My exploration of these realms is recorded in the stillness of fiber frozen into paper.” Her award-winning work has been exhibited in both festivals and galleries, and has been purchased by
collectors in more than 15 countries. Most recently, Barkley was selected to appear in the soon to be published book, 100 Artists of the Southwest (Ed. By Douglas Bullis, Schiffer Publishing). The KISMET exhibition will exhibit work ranging from 24” x 24” framed pieces to 2’ x 5’ vertical standing sculptures and hangings.
Over the last 25 years, Michael Colombo has developed a highly personal vision of the sky and the earth through his exploration of aqua media. His passion for science and the principles of the Chaos Theory, combined with his intimate knowledge of the ocean as a veteran surfer, has led him to experiment with the gravitational forces that move water and the chemistry of pigmentation. Entirely self-taught, the artist manipulates the flow of color and line with unconventional tools and techniques in order to capture patterns of nature. The results are vast, conceptual panoramas of shifting geology with myriads of subtle details, inviting a close up look at the intricate movements of shapes and colors.
Originally from Galveston, Texas, Colombo studied marine biology and received a degree in zoology from the University of Hawaii. He currently lives with his wife, Barbara Barkley, in the mountains of New Mexico. His work has been included in numerous juried and invitational exhibitions, and has been featured on PBS television. At KISMET, Colombo will present a selection of his watercolors, ranging in size from 36” x 48” to 3’x4’.

KISMET OFFERS A RARE GLIMPSE AT THE WORK OF BURMESE ARTIST AND MASTER COLORIST: MG AW
(Westport, CT) —KISMET, the gallery/lifestyle space newly opened in Westport, offers a rare glimpse at the work of contemporary Burmese visual artist, Mg Aw, with a showing of his colorful and picturesque paintings, March 6-31, 2005. KISMET is located at 9 Sconset Square (15 Myrtle Street) in the heart of Westport, CT, and is open Monday-Saturday, 10-6pm, and Sunday by appointment.
MG AW’s work is emblematic of a whole generation of Myanmar artists who, rather than focusing on the repression and poverty of the country, choose to depict the beautiful and uplifting moments of its rural daily life. Representative with flashes of impressionism, Mg Aw’s paintings are deeply rooted in the cultural, religious and physical environment of Burma. They capture scenes of daily life at the market and in the fields, coming to life in a bright palette of luscious colors and infused with a powerful sense of romance. “There is an unadulterated beauty and charm rarely seen in contemporary art that can melt even the most hard-nosed cynic’s views and lure them into taking pleasure in the serene splendor of the paintings” (Priya Malhotra, Asian Art News).

November 8, 2004 --KISMET celebrates the opening of its gallery space with a rare showing of paintings by Min Wae Aung, one of the leading visual artists in Burma today. Also on exhibit is the documentary work of award-winning photographer Kevin Bubriski, taken from his extensive travels through Asia , Peru and Syria . The joint exhibition is running December 1- March 1, 2005 with an opening reception December 1 (Wednesday), 6-9pm . KISMET Gallery will present selected works from Min Wae Aung’s Golden Dream, a striking collection of paintings that are focusing on Buddhist monks and nuns. Although the painter has held many successful solo exhibitions in Asia and Europe , his work has rarely been seen in the United States . This exhibition will mark Min Wae Aung’s second showing over the last ten years on the East coast. It will also allow visitors a unique opportunity to view the work of one of the most renowned Burmese visual artists, at a time when The United States has an embargo against Myanmar , due to its policies on human rights and drug control.
Min Wae Aung (b. 1960) draws inspiration from the Buddhist monks and nuns that are a part of daily life in Myanmar . Through these iconic figures, the painter projects a vision that is rooted in traditional cultural values, yet contains within it a sense of the universal—a challenge that many artists in Asia have striven to meet. Golden Dream (2003) features calm yet purposeful groups of monks, nuns or novices, dressed in vivid traditional Burmese monastic robes and typically shown walking away from the viewer. Featured at different times of the day against a minimalist golden background of varying hues, the figures exist in a seemingly timeless zone where the quality of light and the merest hint of shadow dramatically capture the elusive quality of their silent lives. Min Wae Aung studied traditional landscape painting at the State School of Fine Art in Yangon . However, experience working as a commercial, graphic artist and a visit to the US in 1993 led him to progress towards a more contemporary, graphic style that has captured the imagination of collectors and curators around the world.
The KISMET exhibition will also feature a powerful series of black and white documentary photographs by American photographer Kevin Bubriski (b. 1954). Taken during the artist’s extensive stay in Nepal and travels through Tibet , Bali , Japan , Machu Pichu ( Peru ) and Syria , they present unsentimental, straightforward portraits of a people in their environment. Brilliantly accomplished in terms of technique, composition and aesthetic, Bubriski’s oeuvre has been included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others, and has received numerous awards, including fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Asian Cultural Council. Bubriski is the author of Portrait of Nepal (Chronicle Books), which won the 1993 Golden Light Documentary Book Award and the 1994 Paul Cowan Non-Fiction Award; Power Places of Kathmandu (Inner Traditions International); and Pilgrimage: Looking at Ground Zero (powerHouse Books).

Celebrate Life, Experience KISMET!
Westport’s new lifestyle space opens November 1
October 25, 2004, Westport, CT —Join us for the opening celebration of KISMET, a lifestyle space envisioned by Tamson Bickford Hamrock that promotes Asian-inspired art, culture and wellbeing in the heart of Westport, Connecticut. The opening is scheduled for Monday, November 1, 11am-9pm, at 9 Sconset Square.
Under one unique roof, KISMET is at once an art gallery, an educational and community center that offers visitors and friends an ongoing experience unlike any other. Walk through KISMET’s “golden door” to enter a treasure-filled oasis with a home-like atmosphere and leave the worry and bustle of the world behind. Visitors can enjoy Asian-inspired art and culture, shop for exquisite, limited-edition crafts (including jewelry and wearable art), meet visiting artists and partake in a variety of classes and workshops ranging from the intricate techniques of Burmese lacquer and Tibetan calligraphy to vastu living and the healing arts.
Tamson, a native of Maine, spent the first part of her career at Citibank with postings in London, New York and Singapore, where she developed her fascination with Asian cultures and arts. During a leave of absence from the bank she received a postgraduate degree in the “Arts of Asia” from The University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. It was there where her passion for Asian art flourished and the idea for KISMET was born. KISMET was first realized in a 19th Century carriage house in the heart of Manhattan’s upper East Side where it became an intimate oasis for artists and people from around the world and around the corner to meet to exchange ideas, build community and experience art and culture in a glorious environment. Although the space in New York was closed in order to move to this new Westport space, workshops, classes and exhibits will continue in the KISMET way at various city locations.
“I created KISMET to help people connect across cultures,” Tamson explains. “In essence, I have taken all the things that I am passionate about and have chosen to share them, creating a physical space that embodies a holistic approach to design.” The result is a combination of inspiring products, services and experiences that meet the needs and sensibilities of the West and promote physical, mental and spiritual wellness.
KISMET (which means destiny) is a place where you can start your day with an invigorating yoga class, stop by for an afternoon cup of tea or meditation session—or just connect with other people to share ideas and enjoy life. Believing that communities are powerful vehicles for growth and transformation, KISMET is designed to help people tune in to themselves and grow within a community of like-minded spirits. For Tamson, “it is an invitation to start a journey dedicated to the search of improving the quality of your life by educating, healing and harmonizing the soul.”
Artists whose works will be on exhibit for the opening celebration include Min Wae Aung, one of the leading and most successful artists in Burma today. His work projects a vision that is rooted in traditional cultural values yet contains within it a sense of the universal. Also on exhibit will be the photography of Kevin Bubriski taken from his extensive living experience in Nepal and travels through Machu Pichu and Syria. In addition a wide range of Asian art and jewelry as well as contemporary one of a kind jewelry and home furnishings will be on display and for sale.
